As the curtains drew to a close in the late morning of Tuesday 1 July 2025 at the end of the triannual National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation course, held simultaneously across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, it heralded the successful conclusion of yet another three weeks of camping for the latest set of Nigerian graduates mobilized for the mandatory one year of national service. In general, the objectives of the orientation course include giving Corps members a better understanding of the objectives of the NYSC Scheme; acquainting members with their environment in their political, cultural, social and economic setting; equipping Corps members with practical social and leadership skills that will enable them meet the challenges of the service year ahead; and to inculcate in the Corps members the spirit of national consciousness as a basic ingredient in nation building, amongst others. The orientation course content involves physical training, drills, lectures on the people and tradition of the host State, professional lectures for Corps health personnel, lawyers, teachers and skill acquisition training etc. Corps members participate in social activities designed to create opportunities for them to interact, such as dance, drama, sports, Man ‘O’ War activities, as well as the always eagerly-anticipated ‘Miss NYSC and Mr Macho’ variety night. The NYSC orientation course is always an exciting time and the situation was no different at the Bauchi State camp which held in Wailo, a rural town in Ganjuwa Local Government Area (LGA) of the state, located roughly 60km from Bauchi city, the state capital.
The Miss NYSC and Mr Macho night took place on Friday 27 June at the main auditorium of the camp, and involved each of ten platoons putting forward a female and male representative for a contest to determine who gets to be crowned ‘King’ and ‘Queen’ of the camp. The title of ‘Miss NYSC’ was won by Ms. Sandra Chigozie Emesiobi of Platoon 9, while the ‘Mr Macho’ crown was taken by Mr. Henry Ebuka Oranyele, a native of Anambra State, representing Platoon 7, with Platoons 8 and 2 taking first and second-runner up positions respectively. Oranyele, a graduate of Management Information Technology and an avid bodybuilding/fitness enthusiast, could barely contain his excitement: “I couldn’t believe I took the title, how people were chanting my name, and how popular I became immediately afterwards. Bodybuilding is a sport I love so much, and I look to use this experience and confidence gained to stand me in good stead when I eventually take part in an actual bodybuilding contest.” Mark the name, folks, here’s another one for the future!
