All roads led to the temporary site of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Sokoto State Orientation camp, located in Farfaru, Wamakko L.G.A. on Sunday 3 March 2024. This is because the traditional ‘Variety night’ marking the conclusion of the 3-week camping period took place, featuring a range of activities including drama, dancing competition, cooking competition as well as cultural troupe competitions, but the cynosure of all eyes was the flagship event titled ‘Miss NYSC and Mr Macho’.
After a keen contest, Ms. Amira Ashabi Ashiru of ‘6’ Platoon was crowned with the title of ‘Miss NYSC’ and was gifted with an electric cooker, amongst other minor prizes, while Mr. Gibson Fwangshak Ngwom of ‘8’ Platoon beat all comers to take the ‘Mr Macho’ title, collecting a standing electric fan as his gift amongst others. Ngwom, an avid bodybuilding enthusiast, took the victory as well as the whole camp experience in his stride: “I am very happy with the outcome, with the fame it has brought, as well as the entire camp experience in general, and I am happy with the performance of my platoon in all other activities during this variety night.” This sentiment was shared by a vast majority of those who partook in the 2024 Batch ‘A’ Stream 1 camp exercise.
For Ngwom, it’s the mandatory year of national service next, but beyond that, the young man has his sights set on competing at a major national bodybuilding championship and more: “I look forward to competing at shows like Mr Flex and the Ultimate Classic, but I would like to take some time to improve on my legs before then”. The Nigerian bodybuilding scene awaits his arrival!
